Foot Problems From Diabetic Patients

Foot problems are a common and serious concern for individuals with diabetes, often leading to complications like diabetic foot ulcers. Diabetes can cause nerve damage and poor blood circulation, making the feet more prone to injuries that might go unnoticed due to reduced sensation. The lack of feeling increases the risk of wounds, blisters, and ulcers, which can worsen without proper care. Diabetic foot ulcers can take a long time to heal and may lead to infections if not treated properly. Podiatrists play a vital role in managing diabetes related foot issues. They can perform necessary treatments, such as debridement to remove dead tissue, suggest appropriate footwear to alleviate pressure on affected areas, and provide wound care solutions. If you have a foot problem related to diabetes, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for regular monitoring and care.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM from Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Facts About Foot Pain

Foot pain can stem from various causes, and understanding these can aid in effective treatment and prevention. Common sources of foot pain can include plantar fasciitis, characterized by heel pain due to inflammation of the plantar fascia, and bunions, which are bony bumps at the base of the big toe, and arthritis, affecting joints and causing swelling and stiffness. Injuries such as fractures, sprains, or strains can also lead to significant discomfort. Footwear plays an important role as wearing ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or lack of proper support can exacerbate or cause pain. Overuse of activities like running or prolonged standing can contribute as well. Managing foot pain involves rest, compression, and elevation, in addition to pain relievers. Wearing supportive shoes and using orthotics can alleviate discomfort. If you have persistent or worsening foot pain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist, who can diagnose underlying issues and recommend tailored treatments, ensuring better long-term foot health.

Various Causes of Heel Pain

There are many types of disorders that cause pain in the heel. The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the plantar fascia tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Other common sources of heel pain include a calcaneal, or heel bone, fracture, and heel pad syndrome, which is a wearing down of the cushion on the bottom of the heel. Other causes of heel pain are nerve entrapment, including tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also cause tingling, numbness or burning, and neuromas, or nerve swelling. Achilles tendinopathy, or damage to the tendon that attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone, may result in heel pain. Growing active children may be prone to Sever’s disease, which is irritation in the growth plate of the heel. A podiatrist will typically begin an evaluation by asking where the pain is located, along with some family medical history questions followed by a physical examination. This foot doctor may use various diagnostic tools to determine the underlying cause of your heel pain and how best to treat it. If you have heel pain, it’s suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM of Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Strengthening Exercises for Flat Feet

Flat feet, characterized by low or absent arches, can lead to foot pain and discomfort if not properly managed. Strengthening exercises can help to alleviate symptoms and improve foot function. Toe curls are effective in strengthening the muscles that support the arch, and simply curling a towel with your toes can achieve this. Arch lifts involve standing on your toes and slowly lowering back down, repeating several times to build strength in the arch area. Heel raises also target the calf muscles, essential for supporting the foot's structure. Additionally, toe spreads can help strengthen the muscles between the toes, enhancing overall foot stability. Consistency is key to seeing results, so incorporating these exercises into a daily routine, in addition to wearing supportive footwear, can significantly benefit individuals with flat feet. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer you effective relief techniques for any pain or discomfort you may have.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM from Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
